A man was in "very critical" condition after he was shot in the chest in Homewood tonight, Pittsburgh police said.
Police suspect that Dayon Shelton, 21, was shot on a hill near the intersection of Hermitage Street and Brushton Avenue when someone opened fire about 8:30 p.m., striking him multiple times in the chest and shoulder, said Lt. Richard Pritchard with the city's Zone 5 station based in Highland Park.
Police said Mr. Shelton was apparently entering or exiting a vehicle on Brushton Avenue when one or more individuals fired at least 25 times at him, from a nearby parking lot, with a high-powered rifle, said Lt. Daniel Herrmann. Mr. Shelton ran and collapsed on the street about 50 yards away from the gunman.
Three vehicles were struck by the gunfire and one bullet went through the roof of a house that exited into the bedroom of a young boy, Lt. Herrmann said. No other people were injured by the gunfire.
Lt. Pritchard said several officers were stationed nearby on other calls when the shots rang out. They arrived within 30 seconds and found that the three vehicles, including a red SUV, had been shot out.
The officers' close proximity to the shooting is "the only reason [Mr. Shelton's] survived as long," Lt. Pritchard said while officers surveyed the remnants of the bullet-ridden cars about an hour and a half later.
Medics rushed Mr. Shelton to UPMC Presbyterian. No witnesses immediately came forward and it was not immediately clear how many people were responsible for the shooting.
Tonight's shooting occurred blocks away from a shooting that left one woman dead and two men injured late Sunday night. In that case, police suspect that someone opened fire on two cars in the 7300 block of Monticello Street. The driver of one car, a man who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, found his own method of traveling to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was in stable condition.
The driver of the other car, Raynna Church, 31, of Penn Hills, was found shot to death inside a "bullet-riddled" car that had crashed in the 7100 block of Monticello Street. Her passenger, a 34-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Homicide detectives are investigating both cases. Anyone with information is asked to call 412-323-7800.
