The death of a man who was pulled from a burning South Side Slopes home early Monday has been ruled a suicide.

John McMahon, 66, died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Allegheny County medical examiner's office has ruled.

Officers in Zone 3 responded to the report of a fire on Eleanor Street shortly after midnight. The officers forced their way into the burning home, where they found Mr. McMahon unresponsive on a couch with a bullet wound to his head.

They removed him from the home and medics took him to UPMC Mercy, where he was pronounced dead.

Pittsburgh homicide and arson detectives are investigating.
