Man pleads guilty to '88 Shadyside rape

A California man pleaded guilty this week to raping a woman at knifepoint in her Shadyside apartment building in 1988.
Stevey Kiser, 56, of San Diego, faces four to eight years in prison followed by three years of probation as part of a plea deal arranged after investigators used DNA evidence to charge him with raping the woman.
The woman told police that she was walking home from a friend's house and entering her apartment when a man hit her on the head, knocking her to the ground before he raped her and threatened to kill her.
The woman contacted police 23 years later, when she was reading a book about "East End Rapist" Keith Wood, and asked if her rape kit, collected before the medical examiner's office began performing DNA tests, had been compared against entries in a national database.
The medical examiner's office processed the DNA sample and learned in April that it matched Kiser's sample, according to a criminal complaint. Kiser's DNA was placed into the database after he was arrested on a pair of felony firearms offenses in California, where the law requires officers to collect DNA samples from all adults arrested on felony charges.
