An Erie man charged with stabbing a woman while exiting a Greyhound bus this morning told Pittsburgh police he suffers from mental illness.
Paul Berard, 51, was charged with aggravated assault after the attack, which happened about 7 a.m. at the Downtown station. The victim told police she was walking off the bus when she felt a man push up against her and felt a pain in her buttocks, as if she had been poked.
The woman noticed she was bleeding, police said, and was taken to UPMC Mercy for treatment of what police described as a superficial wound. A Greyhound security guard recovered a 3-inch knife from Mr. Berard. Officers noticed it had blood on the tip.
Mr. Berard initially refused to discuss the incident, but police said he later told them he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
