A Homewood man was sentenced to five years probation Monday after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 3-year-old boy.
Gregory Dalton, 18, also pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment before Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Donna Jo McDaniel stemming from the Aug. 9 accidental shooting death of Zy'Miere Sewel.
Mr. Dalton, who was the brother of Zy'Miere's mother's boyfriend, was at their apartment in Homewood that night and had a .380-caliber handgun with him. He left the weapon out when he went to sleep about 1 a.m., and the boy woke up and got the gun, said Assistant District Attorney Chris Hoffman.
He accidentally shot himself in the head.
Mr. Dalton, who had been on a pass from a juvenile correctional facility in Eastern Pennsylvania at the time, grabbed the gun and fled the scene. He was captured nine days later by state police and U.S. marshals in Indiana County.
The reckless endangering charge applies to a 1-year-old girl who was also in the home at the time.
