Man arrested in North Side bank robbery
A man who police say was carrying containers of gasoline and shrapnel has been arrested in connection with a North Side bank robbery.
Nathaniel Washington, 36, of Perry North, entered First Niagara Bank in the 4000 block of Perrysville Avenue around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday and demanded money from a teller, Major Crimes Lt. Kevin Kraus said.
Mr. Washington left on foot with $3,559, according to court documents. He was apprehended a short time later by Zone 1 officers, Lt. Kraus said.
During an interview with police, "Mr. Washington denied having any involvement in the bank robbery and stated, 'I just got off the bus and I was arrested for no reason,' " according to police documents.
Police recovered a knife, two homemade incendiary devices and all of the money taken from the bank. The incendiary devices were made of baby food jars filled with gasoline, shrapnel and other substances, Lt. Kraus said.
Mr. Washington has been charged with a felony count each of arson (possession of explosive or incendiary material) and causing or risking catastrophe; two felony counts of robbery; and two misdemeanor counts for incendiary devices.
The FBI is assisting with the investigation.
