Groups seek to set priorities for new Pittsburgh police chief

A coalition of community groups is calling on Pittsburgh City Council to hold a public hearing to help shape priorities for a new police chief.
The groups -- the Alliance for Police Accountability, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Black Political Empowerment Project, the NAACP, the Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network and Urban League of Pittsburgh -- plan to hold a news conference Wednesday to elaborate on their demand.
In a statement today, the groups said the hearing is needed "to obtain input about the issues that a new Pittsburgh Bureau of Police chief should prioritize in order to improve relations with the community and restore confidence in local law enforcement."
Nate Harper resigned as chief last week amid a federal investigation of the police bureau. Regina McDonald was named acting chief during the search for Mr. Harper's replacement.
Though council members can weigh in on the matter, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl can hire a new chief without a council vote, the city clerk's office said.
