Five-story Hyatt House hotel planned in Bloomfield

The site of the former Don Allen showroom at Baum Boulevard and South Atlantic Avenue in Bloomfield is expected to become a new Hyatt House, with construction to begin in the spring, according to Keith McGraw, a partner in the hotel development and management group Concord Hospitality.
Concord has 14 hotels in the Pittsburgh area, including a Marriott Courtyard across the street and a Marriott in Bakery Square. It is currently building a Hyatt House at the SouthSide Works in a partnership with Oxford Development.
The proposed $22 million hotel will have five floors with 128 units, 70 percent of them suites for extended stay, he said. The developer will seek LEED -- Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design -- certification.
Another trip to the planning commission is necessary because small changes were made to the design after the original plans for a Hilton changed. Concord has a variance from the zoning board of adjustment for the proposed height.
The Baum Centre Initiative, a 5-year-old group of residents and business owners, represented neighborhood sentiments when the project was first proposed last March, said Lenore Williams, chairman of the initiative.
"No one had too many issues, and even now it is still very favorable," she said. "And it is needed. The [Marriott] Courtyard is constantly booked."
Mr. McGraw said the neighborhood "was very diligent, concerned about what it would look like. They wanted an urban streetscape. We're going to do extensive streetscaping and landscaping, with benches and new sidewalks."
The building will be brick and metal and the parking lot will be behind the building. Together they will occupy two acres.
Mr. McGraw said the location is "a growth market," the gateway to Bloomfield and Shadyside that benefits from the presence of UPMC, the pharmaceutical industry and Google.
