A Pittsburgh firefighter was charged this weekend with driving under the influence after police stopped him during a roving DUI checkpoint in Homewood.
Police Friday night stopped Edward Fields, 44, of Lawrenceville, near the 7200 block of Frankstown Avenue after they noticed his red Mustang swerving and crossing over the double yellow line, according to a criminal complaint.
The arresting officer, George Kristoff, wrote that he could smell alcohol on Mr. Fields' breath. Mr. Fields told the officer he had only had two glasses of wine, but "based on his state and the odor, it was obvious that he had more to drink than two glasses of wine," the complaint says.
Mr. Fields failed field sobriety tests, police said, and agreed to take a blood test, the results of which were not detailed in the complaint. Mr. Fields joined the fire bureau in July 2000, according to a recent roster. Chief Darryl Jones could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
