Groundbreaking will begin next week on expansion of The Priory Hotel in the North Side's historic Deutschtown neighborhood. The work is expected to be complete by October.

The former Benedictine monastery was built in 1888 and became a boutique hotel of 25 rooms in 1985.

The additional 17 guest rooms, meeting space, elevator and fitness center will occupy the site of an apartment building that was gutted by a fire a year ago.

John Graf, director of operations for the Priory Hospitality Group, said the new structure will be built to look like other late-19th century mansion townhouses in the neighborhood, with gables and a mansard slate roof.

The new structure will be joined to the existing building, and an elevator will be installed at the juncture of the two structures.

The project cost is an estimated $2.25 million, to be financed by First National Bank and the Northside Community Development Fund.
