Environmental activists are calling on the Pittsburgh Public Schools to require all of the district's yellow buses to be equipped to contain diesel emissions.

About 15 speakers, led by Clean Water Action and the Group Against Smog and Pollution, planned to attend the board's public hearing last night to ask that the board require bus contractors to retrofit their vehicles or use newer vehicles already equipped with the clean-air technology.

Rachel Filippini, executive director of GASP, said limited grant money is available to help contractors retrofit buses. She said children shouldn't be exposed to diesel pollutants, which can cause respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
