Duquesne University is appealing to the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C., a decision by the board's Pittsburgh office denying the school a religious exemption from board jurisdiction over campus labor matters.

The special appeal relates to efforts by the U.S. Steelworkers to organize adjunct faculty on the Catholic campus, Duquesne spokeswoman Bridget Fare said Tuesday.

A mail ballot is set to begin Friday, and had the Pittsburgh office granted the exemption, it would have effectively blocked the vote. Union officials have said the school's actions contradict its religious teachings but the school disagrees.
