Doughboy retail project securing more funds

A proposed retail and residential development in Doughboy Square in Lawrenceville has moved a step closer to reality.
Allegheny County Redevelopment Authority board members voted unanimously Thursday to award a $250,000 community infrastructure and tourism grant for the $7 million, 48,000-square-foot Shops at Doughboy project at 3345 Penn Ave. It was one of six community infrastructure and tourism grants totaling more than $1 million awarded by the board at its meeting. The grants are funded through state gambling revenues.
The Shops at Doughboy development, at the site of a former detailing shop, would feature street-level retail space and upper-floor apartments.
Paul Svoboda, special projects manager for the city's Urban Redevelopment Authority, which requested the grant, said it represents the last piece of financing needed before the project could begin.
The development, he said, would serve as a bridge between the Strip District and Lawrenceville. The developers, October Development and Senko Construction, hope to begin work in the spring. Mr. Svoboda said they are still working with community organizations to refine the design.
In addition to the tourism grant, the project has been awarded a $1 million state redevelopment assistance capital grant.
Other community infrastructure and tourism grants awarded Thursday by the county redevelopment authority board included $200,000 for the renovation of 120 Flowers Ave. in Hazelwood to serve as headquarters for Pittsburgh Fire Fighters Local No. 1 and a community center; $250,000 for the expansion of the Sharpsburg Community Library; and $150,000 for a South Allegheny Community Fitness, Wellness and Learning Center.
