Death penalty not sought for Konias
Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty for Kenneth Konias Jr., a former armored truck driver accused of killing his partner and stealing $2.3 million in cash in February, the Allegheny County District Attorney's office announced today.
Mr. Konias, 22, of Dravosburg, faces trial on charges of robbery, theft and homicide in the death of 31-year-old Michael Haines, who worked with him at Garda Cash Logistics.
Police said Mr. Konias killed Mr. Haines, whose body was found in an armored truck parked underneath the 31st Street Bridge, and then made off with the cash, heading to Florida. He was captured 55 days later in Pompano Beach, a community north of Fort Lauderdale.
A formal arraignment is scheduled today for Mr. Konias. No court date has been set.
