Crews on site to begin dismantling of Civic Arena

The demolition of the Civic Arena began not with a bang, but a whimper on Monday.
Workers for main contractor Noralco Corp. and subcontractor Bristol Environmental spent much of their time mobilizing, two days after the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals cleared the way for the demolition to begin.
Officials with the city-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority, the arena's owner, said it probably would not be until next week that workers begin to peel off the stainless steel that is part of the Igloo's distinctive retractable roof.
The dismantling of the 50-year-old landmark, at a cost of $2.9 million, is expected to take until May.
