Pittsburgh City Councilman Ricky Burgess plans to introduce legislation this morning that will ban smoking in areas of city parks that children frequent.

The ordinance would designate certain areas of city parks, like playgrounds, tobacco-free. Signs would be posted to notify visitors.

The Parks and Recreation Department would be directed to determine the penalty for violators and be responsible for encorcement.

A preliminary vote on the legislation is expected next week. If the bill is signed into law, it would take effect July 1.
