Council OKs tax plan for Millcraft development

Pittsburgh City Council gave final approval Monday to a financing plan for a Downtown development, even though neighbors continued to express concerns about the project.
Council's vote authorized a tax-increment financing plan of up to $8.1 million for Millcraft Industries, which plans to break ground on the $82 million Gardens at Market Square by Feb. 1. The project will consist of 120,000 square feet of office space, 23,000 square feet of retail, a 176-room hotel and a 300-space parking garage.
Occupants of the Benedum Trees and Investment buildings last week voiced concerns ranging from traffic to the distance between their buildings and Millcraft's development. In giving the financing plan preliminary approval, council directed Millcraft to meet with neighbors to try to work out differences before Monday's meeting.
While some progress had been made, some issues remained unresolved, neighbors told council Monday. Council decided to give the financing plan final approval but urged the developer and neighbors to continue trying to resolve their differences.
