City's help won lower assessments, Pittsburgh controller says

Pittsburgh homeowners who sought the city's help in fighting new property assessments have had those assessments reduced by about $32 million so far, Controller Michael Lamb said at a budget hearing today.
In all, 3,000 homeowners took advantage of subsidized appraisals, counseling and legal assistance provided by the city. The 1,434 homeowners who received disposition of their cases through Nov. 26 collectively had their assessments reduced by nearly $32 million. The average individual assessment reduction was $22,275, Mr. Lamb said.
The 1,208 homeowners who received counseling or legal assistance from the controller's office did better than those who opted just for the subsidized appraisal. The average individual assessment reduction for those helped by the controller's office was $26,484, Mr. Lamb said.
The new assessments, ordered by Allegheny County Common Pleas Senior Judge R. Stanton Wettick Jr., take effect next year.
