Pittsburgh police officer injured in motorcycle crash

Police direct traffic around the scene of an accident Thursday involving an officer riding a motorcycle on Penn Avenue at its intersection with North Lexington.

A Pittsburgh police officer riding a motorcycle was struck by car while attempting to promote bicycle safety along Penn Avenue in Point Breeze this evening.
Sgt. Jim LeVier said several officers from the city's traffic unit were working to enforce bicycle safety measures on Penn Avenue when a man driving a brown GMC Envoy struck the officer about 6:30 p.m.
He declined to release the officer's name but said he was in stable condition when he was transported to UPMC Mercy for an evaluation.
The SUV driver and his passenger remained on the scene about an hour later while they waited for accident investigators to arrive.
Pittsburgh police have stepped up their patrols along Penn Avenue since two bicyclists died in accidents on the road in one week.
Anthony Green, 47, of Wilkinsburg, died in UPMC Presbyterian this week from injuries he sustained when an SUV struck him in the 7700 block of Penn, just across the Wilkinsburg border.
James Price, 46, of Homewood, was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in the near the intersection of Penn and Penfield Court on July 25.
