Pittsburgh is inviting companies to submit qualifications for developing a streetcar system and other transportation improvements in the Strip District, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl announced Thursday.

Companies are being asked for visual and financial models for the improvements from 10th to 40th streets, which could include traffic mitigation on Liberty Avenue and bikeway improvements on Penn Avenue, among other things.

"From the Cork Factory to the Otto Milk Building, and now the progress of the new Residences at the Strip development, we've seen a lot of positive movement recently in the Strip District." he said. "New transportation improvements will build on this momentum by providing residents with better transit options and more bike/pedestrian-friendly ways to get in and around the neighborhood."

The $345,000 planning project is funded by the city and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation through the Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative. Companies have until Sept. 23 to submit qualifications and a consultant will be chosen in November.
