City initiative to cut crime leads to arrests in East End

A Pittsburgh crime-fighting strategy that blankets neighborhoods with large numbers of police officers in short bursts led to the arrests Wednesday in the East End of five people on gun, drug and other charges.
The latest implementation of the Pittsburgh Initiative to Reduce Crime was spurred by the killing Sunday of Ne'Ondre Harbour, 16, of Garfield.
The initiative, introduced in Pittsburgh in 2008, is modeled on programs in Chicago, Boston and elsewhere that have reduced gun violence. It uses a comprehensive approach involving law enforcement, social services and community leaders.
Police officers, along with Allegheny County and state probation and parole agents, targeted Zone 5. They seized one gun.
Arrested were Boyd Nelson, 34, of New Kensington, on drug possession charges; Kyle D. Wilson Jr., 18, of Wilkinsburg, on gun and drug offenses; DeShawn A. Pryor, 18, of Highland Park, on a juvenile warrant; Christina M. Lane, 24, of Wilkinsburg, on four bench warrants; and William Cox, 25, of Penn Hills on drug possession charges.
