City Council gives historic status to August Wilson home

Pittsburgh City Council gave final approval yesterday to the designation of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson's boyhood home as a historic structure.

The vote, which came nearly three weeks after deadlines set in the city code expired, was deemed appropriate by the city solicitor.

Paul Ellis Jr., the owner of the Hill District structure, at 1727 Bedford Ave., wants to turn the building into a retreat for writers.
