Capozza named superintendent of SCI Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh's prison has a new superintendent, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections announced today.
Running the State Correctional Institution Pittsburgh since Monday is Mark Capozza, previously the deputy superintendent at SCI Greene. Mr. Capozza succeeds Daniel Burns, who took the top post at SCI Pittsburgh in August 2011, after inmate accusations of abuse spurred the dismissal of the prison's top brass.
Mr. Capozza started his corrections career in California, according to the release. He started with this state's prison system in 1998, and rose from unit manager through the ranks.
He takes over a prison with 1,850 inmates and a staff of 550.
The prison's shakeup stemmed from inmate claims that corrections officers on F Block were systematically hazing and abusing sex offenders. Four officers face pending criminal charges.
The Department of Justice has announced that it is reviewing the prison in a non-criminal probe.
Mr. Burns was not at SCI Pittsburgh during the time of the alleged abuses. He started Sunday as superintendent at SCI Forest.
