Pittsburgh's Zoning Board of Adjustment has approved special exceptions and variances for a new Bottom Dollar at 5200 Penn Ave. on the border of Bloomfield and Garfield.

The proposed store has been embraced by many in both neighborhoods and by some in nearby Friendship, but others who live near the site testified at hearings they feared the store would not be adequately screened and that traffic onto Coral Street would be disruptive to the residential blocks around it.

Leslie A. Peters, an attorney representing the developer, said work on the site will begin soon after the appeal period is over on Dec. 2, weather permitting.

The attorney for the opponents could not be reached.
