A baby Andean condor at the National Aviary no is longer nameless. The female condor chick, born on June 28, will be known as Kachina, a Hopi word for spirit.

The name was chosen as part of a contest that drew 450 entries from children ages 12 and under. Karli Sutton, 8, of Grove City, Mercer County, submitted the winning entry.

Kachina has grown quickly and will be released in South America in a couple of years, said Nuelsi Pales, the aviary's marketing coordinator. Until then, she will live at the aviary with her parents, Lianni and Rhodan.

Kachina is the second condor born at the aviary. The first, Kendall, was born in 2005 and now lives in the wild in Bolivia.
