The four-year director of the Allegheny County Department of Public Works found himself without a job today, and one of his deputies has assumed his post, officials said.
Joe Olczak, who became director under former Executive Dan Onorato in 2008, said he received a letter this week saying the county "is no longer in need of your services."
"I really can't say what their intent or their motive was," he said.
Amie Downs, spokeswoman for county Executive Rich Fitzgerald, declined to comment on Mr. Olczak's departure, saying the executive's office does not discuss "personnel matters."
Mr. Olczak began working for Allegheny County on April 7, 1980, and moved up the ranks. He said his record is "impeccable" and he was caught off-guard by the county's letter.
Mr. Olczak, who made $98,345 a year, appeared with Mr. Fitzgerald earlier this week at a news conference discussing the county's response to Hurricane Sandy. In his absence, Phil LaMay, deputy director of operations and administration, will serve as acting director of the Department of Public Works.
