African American heritage celebration coming Saturday

Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum in Oakland will hold its third annual African American Heritage Celebration Saturday.
The event is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. and will feature a special exhibit and lectures on "The Aftermath of the Civil War: The Black Family, Then and Now."
The one-day exhibit by Soldiers & Sailors historian John L. Ford Sr. examines freed slaves and their families in 1865.
It includes primary source documents and pictures of Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois.
A lecture series will include Mr. Ford and the following speakers: Marcia M. Sturdivant, deputy director of Allegheny County Department of Human Services, and Marlene Bransom, president of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society.
The event will also feature performances by the museum's Regiment United States Colored Troops Drum and Fife youth re-enactment group and Sheila Beasley of Sheila B Productions.
