A dog's tale: Canine pals reunited

One day in late August, architect Peter Kreuthmeier's dog Zeke insisted on sniffing at a hole in an overturned garbage can in Garfield. When a wet nose poked through, it was the start of a beautiful friendship.
The puppy had been shut up in the garbage can and possibly lengthened his life by chewing the hole. A West Deer family stepped up to complete the rescue and took the character they called Oscar for a reunion with Zeke Thursday at the offices of Loysen + Kreuthmeier in Garfield.
Wendy Long and her children seized on the proximity to combine the visit with a trip to doggie training in East Liberty.
"They stayed for 45 minutes and it was full-throttle play the whole time," Mr. Kreuthmeier said. "They acted like long lost friends. I have never seen Zeke that animated with another dog. It was joy with ten exclamation points."
Oscar is a 1-year-old terrier mix and Zeke, a rescue himself with a guessed age of about 7, is a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen.
