Pittsburgh police have arrested three children who are accused of stealing a purse from an older woman who offered them a ride home over the weekend.

Officers from the city's Zone 6 station on the West End arrested two of the children Tuesday and one today. All three were being taken to the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center.

Police began searching for the children on Saturday, after an 84-year-old woman told police she crashed her car into a fire hydrant while at least two boys tried to steal her purse.

The woman told police she left a church on Landis Street in Sheraden shortly before 5 p.m. when two boys, who she guessed were between 10 and 12 years old, asked her for a ride and she obliged.

The boys tried to steal her purse while she was driving and she then crashed into a fire hydrant near the corner of Ashlyn and Landis streets, Cmdr. Scott Schubert wrote in an alert to community members.

The boys ran away with the woman's purse, which police later found inside a vacant home. Her wallet was missing.
