Random Acts of Kindness: A knight in a hard hat shows car compassion
Crossing the Liberty Bridge on Oct. 24 and trying to avoid a collision with an erratic motorist, I had to swerve and drive over several traffic signs around the heavily traveled construction site.
My Hyundai groaned to an abrupt stop as close to a towering wall and as far to my right as possible, yet partially overlapping the exit lane to Bigelow Boulevard.
With no cell phone to call AAA, I tried relying on my flashing hazard lights to attract the attention of the Pittsburgh police. While anxiously pacing back and forth hoping for divine intervention, I saw this Good Samaritan walking toward me.
Sensing my dilemma, he not only volunteered his cell phone but ushered me to his white Vantage truck and suggested we hop in its cab in order, in relative quiet, to contact AAA. After he dialed the number for me, my ears weren't keen enough to decipher what the representative for AAA was saying. Consequently, my knight in hard hat once again diplomatically interceded on my most appreciative behalf.
Soon my tow came, and my disabled car and I were on our way. Thank goodness that helpful young man -- his name may have been Eddie -- was working that day near the entrance to the Veterans Bridge going north. My indebtedness to him is incalculable.
We parked our car at 5:30 p.m. to go to the AMC Loews movie theater at the Waterfront, where the picture "Argo" was great, enjoyable and exciting.
After the movie we went to Bravo for dinner and then returned to our car at 9:30 p.m. I put the key in to start the car -- what a letdown, the battery was drained. I opened the hood and checked the battery cables -- I don't really know what I was looking for.
I phoned the AAA and was told the wait for service would be approximately one hour. I left the hood up so AAA would spot us.
Well, what do you know -- a friendly young couple came along, inquiring about our problem. We told them our car would not start, and then Caroline, who was with Howard, said she had a cable to jump-start the car.
Harold attached the cables to the car, a minute went by and -- eureka!-- our motor was running again.
We could not thank Caroline and Howard enough for their kindness. We phoned AAA to cancel the service and were back on our way home.
I just returned home from dinner with two friends, and the smile on my face will be with me for some time.
We went to a local restaurant, Rene's, in East McKeesport. Since it was pay day, two of us ordered the steak special and added an appetizer.
We were enjoying a fine dinner when our young waiter came to our table and said that we did not need to worry about the check -- the gentleman below the TV had paid it. Since we had been joking with the waiter earlier, we assumed he was joking with us.
Then the gentleman he had referred to came across the room and appeared at our table. He asked if we had enjoyed our dinner. We assured him that we had, and he said he had paid the bill, and he wished us a good evening.
We thanked him and told him to have a good weekend, and then he was gone. We did not ask his name, but he can be assured we have a warm spot in our hearts for him and his random act of kindness. Thank you again.
