Zoo shows off new tiger cubs

The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium's newest babies got their first glimpse of the public today.
Animal keepers Mark McDonough and Kathy Suthard brought out two of the three Amur Tiger cubs born on Sept. 12 to Toma, the zoo's 12-year-old female.
They aren't named yet, but keepers tell them apart by their individual markings. The male has a "W" shape above his eyes and the female has a check mark above hers, said Ms. Suthard, the lead carnivore keeper.
"They wrestle and play constantly," she said.
The third cub, another female, is in the zoo's ICU being treated for a systemic bacterial infection from a deep abcess on the base of her skull that she was born with, said Connie George, zoo spokeswoman.
It will be at least a couple more weeks before the cubs are strong and agile enough to be on exhibit, but they are accessible through YouTube videos on the zoo's Web site, www.pittsburghzoo.org
Soon there will be a live webcam of the cubs in action, Ms. George said.
