ORLANDO, Fla. -- West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, who ended his sophomore season on Tuesday night with a 23-7 loss against North Carolina State in the Champs Sports Bowl, will need surgery in January to repair a stress fracture in his left foot.

Football program trainer Dave Kerns confirmed that Smith, who has suffered stress fractures in the same foot two years running, played all season hobbled by the stress fracture.

Smith missed last spring practice after having surgery to repair a stress fracture in the same foot and his status for this upcoming spring practice will not be known until after the surgery next month.
