Versailles council reinstates police force, raises taxes

The Versailles council voted unanimously last night to reinstate the small borough's three-officer police force.
The move comes a year after a previous council voted to furlough the officers and contract with neighboring White Oak for police protection.
Council members Jim Sheedy, Cynthia Richards, Joel Yeckel, Cheryl D'Antonio, Frank Bunda and Anita Gricar voted to reinstate the department. Council president Linda Sheedy abstained because one of the Versailles police officers is her brother.
The council also approved a 3-mill tax increase, putting the tax rate at 8 mills, to cover the cost of back wages to the three officers for the year that they were furloughed, Ms. Sheedy said.
Versailles police officers will start patrolling at 12:01 a.m. Monday. Council also authorized the purchase of a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria from a local dealership for $9,515 and the purchase of a police radio from a taxi operator for $100.
