ALTOONA, Pa. -- A state trooper says Altoona police were justified in shooting a 26-year-old man who allegedly aimed a pistol at them.
Hollidaysburg Trooper Richard Brozenich says in a statement that the man ignored warnings to drop the weapon before both officers fired.
Two officers were called to check on the man's welfare and found him sitting in a vehicle holding the gun about 2 a.m. Sunday. State police say a witness told them the man had planned to aim the gun at police in hopes they would shoot him.
Trooper Brozenich tells the Altoona Mirror the man will be charged with simple assault. He is recovering in an Altoona hospital. State police have not released his name, or the names of the officers involved in the shooting.
The Altoona police are conducting a separate internal investigation.
