Thousands of people remain without power, particularly in the South Hills and Westmoreland County, in the wake of storms that blew through the region Wednesday afternoon.

Duquesne Light said 7,800 of its customers were still in the dark as of 6 a.m.

Those in the hardest hit areas of Baldwin Borough, Banksville, Beechview, Brookline, Castle Shannon, Dormont, Mt. Lebanon and Scott may not see power restored until late Sunday morning. Other areas should see restoration by Saturday morning.

The utility said today it has had to cope with 1,300 reports of downed wires, 500 reports of trees or limbs on wires and 80 reports of broken or damaged poles.

As of 8 a.m., Allegheny Power reported 1,483 customers without power, 1,000 of those in Westmoreland. Service should be restored in the county by late tonight.
