Peter Garland, executive vice chancellor of the State System of Higher Education, has been named acting chancellor effective March 1 with the departure of Chancellor John Cavanaugh, officials announced today.

Mr. Garland will serve through Nov. 1, or until Mr. Cavanaugh's successor is appointed, the system said in a statement.

Mr. Garland was appointed executive associate to the chancellor in 2002 and has since occupied various senior leadership roles, including vice chancellor for academic and student affairs. He was named executive vice chancellor in 2006.

Mr. Cavanaugh, who became chancellor in June 2008, is departing Feb. 28 to become president and chief executive officer of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area based in Washington, D.C.

The State System enrolls 115,000 students on its 14 member universities that include California, Clarion, Edinboro, Indiana and Slippery Rock in Western Pennsylvania
