State GOP to endorse candidates today

HARRISBURG -- Pennsylvania's Republican Party committee members are gathering today at their winter meeting to endorse statewide candidates in the spring primaries, although an endorsement in the crowded field for U.S. Senate is no sure thing.
The Republican State Committee was expected in Hershey to endorse uncontested bids by Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed for attorney general and Washington County Commissioner Diana Irey Vaughan for treasurer.
Meanwhile, state Rep. John Maher of Allegheny County and former banker Frank Pinto of Dauphin County are vying for the nomination to run for auditor general.
However, it's unclear whether any of the six candidates vying to contest Democrat Bob Casey's re-election bid for U.S. Senate will garner a majority of votes by state committee members required for the endorsement.
Primary elections are April 24.
