HARRISBURG -- The Department of Labor and Industry's online system for people to file claims for jobless benefits wasn't working today due to a computer glitch, but it will be back up and running tomorrow, officials said.

On Sunday, said department spokesman Christopher Manlove, "The online unemployment compensation filing system experienced a technical failure, which disrupted the initial and continued biweekly claims filed via the Internet."

The department's information technology staff has been working on the problem, he added, and the filing of claims will resume at 6 a.m. at www.uc.pa.gov.

Because of the online problem, the filing of claims over the phone increased sharply, making it difficult for some people to get through.

Claimants who couldn't get through online or on the phone can still call until 8:30 p.m. at 1-888-313-7284. Mr. Manlove said the call volume usually declines after 5 p.m.

All continuing claims filed by Wednesday will be paid by Friday.
