South Fayette approves residential drilling ban

South Fayette commissioners voted 5-0 Monday night to adopt an ordinance that bans natural gas and oil drilling in residential and conservation areas, including neighborhoods, farms and public parks.
The majority of the 200-person crowd in the middle school auditorium stood and applauded after the vote.
"I can't tell you how happy I am right now and how many people worked so hard to make this happen," resident Keith McDonough said.
Some others opposed the township's decision to restrict Marcellus Shale development to industrial and commercial zones.
"In these economic times, we need this industry here," resident Mike Mikus said.
