Wesley Shipley will be the next superintendent of the Shaler Area School District.
In a 6-3 vote at a special meeting Wednesday, Shaler school board approved Mr. Shipley for a four-year term beginning Aug. 1, 2011, through July 31, 2015, at a prorated salary of $130,000. Board members Arch Autenreith, Catherine Davidson and Jeanne Petrovich voted against the appointment.
He will replace Donald Lee, who will end his 14-year reign. Mr. Shipley was chosen from a field of 18 applicants, several of whom are serving superintendents. Each of these candidates was considered carefully by the board, Mr. Lee noted, adding: "They really did try to examine the field to make sure they got the best candidate."
"It's an honor and a privilege to be chosen," Mr. Shipley said after the vote. He thanked Mr. Lee for hiring him as assistant superintendent in December 2009. "I hope to build on the solid foundation he has created."
Before joining Shaler as assistant superintendent, Mr. Shipley served four years as program director for the Freeport Area School District. Before that, he was principal at South Buffalo Elementary and at Freeport Elementary. He also was assistant principal for three years at Huston Middle School in the Burrell School District, and spent eight years teaching in the Deer Lakes School District.
Mr. Shipley earned his doctorate in educational leadership at Duquesne University. His master's degree in educational leadership is from Youngstown State University in Ohio. He received his bachelor's degree in elementary education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
