The Seneca Valley school board rejected revisions to the district's wellness policy in a 5-4 vote Monday night. Administrators had proposed the changes, along with the adoption of a food allergy management policy at last week's meeting.

The board unanimously approved the first reading of the food allergy management policy that follows Pennsylvania guidelines for handling allergies in schools. Those guidelines were released last December.

But board members rejected revisions to the wellness policy calling it too strict.

The plan called for prohibiting all food for birthday celebrations and banning teachers for using food as a reward in the classroom.

"Kids in kindergarten through fourth grade love to celebrate their birthdays," board member Kelly Kopera said. "There's a little bit of fun that has to stay in school."

Assistant Superintendent Jeffrey Fuller said he hopes school board members will return next month with revisions to the wellness policy acceptable to the entire board.
