The Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ has rejected a contract proposal that would have given about 1,200 Allegheny County janitors and commercial office cleaners "a mere 5 cent raise," according to the local.

Across the Northeast, about 60,000 janitorial workers represented by SEIU 32BJ will see theit contracts expire at the end of this month.

About 1,200 of those workers are in the Pittsburgh area, including those working at "corporate headquarters like Glaxco-Smith-Klien and big developments such as the SouthSide Works," the union said.

"A nickel will not help Pittsburgh's hard-working cleaners pay the bills or put food on the table for their families," said Gabe Morgan, 32BJ Pennsylvania State Director, in a statement.
