With heavy rain and possibly a thunderstorm expected today, the National Weather Service is continuing to warn residents that river levels are predicted to rise, flooding the Monongahela Wharf.
The weather service this morning posted a flood watch through this evening for Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties, and for several counties in northern West Virginia and southeastern Ohio.
An additional flood advisory is in effect for the Ohio River at Pittsburgh until Friday afternoon. The river measured at 16.5 feet at 3 a.m. Tuesday before rain began to fall. Meteorologists predict that level could reach more than 18 feet -- the flood threshold for the wharf -- by noon Wednesday, following storms that could dump as much of 2 inches of rain in some parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
The river is expected to crest at 20 feet Thursday. At 20 feet, water is a foot deep on the North Shore riverwalk.
