The plan to install a rain garden along Route 50 in Heidelberg has been cancelled, Heidelberg Mayor Kenneth LaSota said at Tuesday night's borough council meeting.

A rain garden is a collection of plants watered by runoff from areas such as parking lots and walkways. It was a key feature in a $2.9 million project to enhance the Route 50 corridor in Heidelberg, Scott, and Carnegie. Plans included making the corridor more pedestrian friendly by adding the linear rain garden, crosswalks paved with brick, new sidewalks, decorative lighting and shade trees in the three communities.

However, the mayor said, engineering estimates for project came in at $4.9 million, almost twice the $2.9 million that was allocated to the project by the federal government and state.

"The rain garden has been deleted. Many of the aesthetics of the project like trees and ornamental lighting will have to be scaled back," the mayor said.
