PSO's Honeck takes pay cut in solidarity with musicians

On the heels of the Pittsburgh Symphony musicians taking a 9.7 percent pay cut for their new contract, PSO music director Manfred Honeck announced today he will take a 10-percent reduction in his salary.

"I felt I cannot stand in front of the orchestra and know that they sacrificed and I didn't," he said. "I have to play a part."

PSO board chairman Richard P. Simmons said, "It's quite unusual in this day and age for a music director to voluntarily offer to decrease his salary."

Mr. Honeck's salary in 2009-10 was $546,700. Both pay cuts begin Sept. 5.
