Allegheny County fire marshals will spend part of today attempting to figure out what started the fire that destroyed the popular North Versailles restaurant, the Winchester Room.

North Versailles police said they received a call at 1:06 p.m. Monday for a fire at the steakhouse at 1728 Lincoln Highway. Firefighters were on the scene for nearly eight hours trying to douse the flames and clean up the scene of the three-alarm fire.

North Versailles fire Chief Jeff McNeill said the restaurant was a "total loss."

"I can't even tell you the last time we had a big fire like this," he said.

The restaurant was not open when the fire began, and no one was injured, the chief said.

Units from about a half-dozen fire departments fought the blaze.

Chief McNeill said it was too early to tell Monday night how the blaze started and where. He said firefighters went in the front door, discovered that the floor near the bar had burnt through and then pulled back, deciding to fight the blaze defensively rather than offensively.

The Winchester Room has been operating in North Versailles for several decades. Chief McNeill said it was a popular place to gather and always busy.
