Police are leaving a house in East Liberty they had surrounded following a report that a person had been shot during a robbery attempt. Police initially entered the wrong home in the incident.
Officers, including SWAT, responded to the 5600 block of Hays Street, near Negley Avenue, late this morning.
The incident was called in as an armed robbery, according to Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Larry Ross. Two black men with masks on had broken into 5613 Hays St. They got into scuffle with a 29-year-old man in the house, Cmdr. Ross said, then shot him in the leg. The man ran out of the house. He has been taken to UPMC Presbyterian and his injury is not believed to be life threatening.
Meanwhile, police responded to the wrong house, going to the door of a residence at the other end of the red-brick rowhouse. They kicked in the door of 5625 Hays, where they believed the robbery had taken place. When they realized the residents there were not involved, they told them to leave the residence.
They then sent in a robot to clear the residence at 5613 Hays.
When it was clear that the robbers had escaped, police let residents back into their homes.
