SHARON, Pa. -- A Mercer County man jailed on charges he robbed a bank allegedly told police he needed the money for back taxes to keep from losing his home.

Kenneth Stowell, 64, of West Salem, was arrested Wednesday on charges that he robbed the PNC Bank in Hermitage on Aug. 29.

Police say a distant relative tipped off police that Mr. Stowell had been in town that day and later said a hat worn by the suspect in surveillance video was similar to one the relative saw in Mr. Stowell's kitchen.

Police and FBI agents questioned Mr. Stowell earlier this week, and he acknowledged robbing the bank because he needed $1,100 to pay the tax debt by Sept. 27.
