Police are investigating suspected dogfighting after they found at least 30 wounded pit bulls in a Duquesne home today.

Humane officers found the dogs -- including one dead puppy -- when police searched a home in the 600 block of Viola Avenue this afternoon. The animals suffered bite wounds on their bodies and had been living in "despicable, unsanitary conditions," humane officer Katie Waters said.

The surviving animals were treated by veterinarians at Animal Friends, where Ms. Waters said they will be held as police continue their investigation.

Ms. Waters declined to say what evidence police recovered that suggests the dogs had been involved in a fighting ring, but said "it was one of the most gruesome scenes we've seen in a while."

No charges have been filed in the incident.
