Pittsburgh police will shut down Washington Place between Centre and Bedford avenues tonight to accommodate throngs of fans expected to watch Game 3 of the NHL Stanley Cup final outside Mellon Arena tonight.

Variable message boards will be posted at Washington Place near Epiphany Church and at Centre Avenue and Crawford Street. The boards, along with additional signage, will be positioned in key places to alert and direct fans and other vehicular traffic to available parking in the West and North lots at Mellon Arena. The signage will also give alternate directions to the Veterans Bridge, Bigelow Boulevard and access to other roads leading out of the city.

The large crowds will cause heavy congestion on roads surrounding the arena, police have warned. They encouraged fans to use Downtown parking garages and walk to the arena or public transportation.

Port Authority will run extra service on the Light Rail Transit system to accommodate Penguins fans and those attending tonight's Pirates game at PNC Park.
